Emmanuel Acho calls selection of keynote speakers ‘greatest honor’ of his life

(KXAN) – New York Times #1 bestselling author and former Texas Longhorns, NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho stopped by KXAN Studios for a chat about his commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin’s 139th early spring the Saturday.

Acho returns to Forty Acres 10 years after graduating from the University of Texas.

“I love it because that’s where it all started,” Acho said. “Home is Austin, Texas and that’s where my heart is.”

Acho said receiving the call from UT President Jay Hartzell to be the keynote speaker for this year’s ceremony was “breathtaking.”

“It’s the greatest honor of my life,” added Acho.

UT’s start will be Saturday night at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Acho had huge success as the host of the video series “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man”. The Emmy-winning YouTube series featured Acho interviewing celebrities about racism and racial injustice following the death of George Floyd.

“Something has to be done. I say man met the moment. I didn’t speak because I wanted to. I spoke because I had to,” Acho said of the show. “Sometimes your calling is bigger than your career.”

On Sunday, Acho will reunite with one of his guests from the video series. Matthew McConaughey will join Acho for a conversation about his new book “Illogical”.

BookPeople’s event, hosted by the Moody College of Communication, is taking place at the LBJ Auditorium.
