People had been lining up since 2 a.m. Saturday at Echo Park for a school supply giveaway that included an appearance by Dodgers Pitch Clayton Kershaw. The Back to School Party provides backpacks for children in need.
“Being prepared and being ready and only having to focus on school is great,” said student Deborah Sanchez.
There were also free pencils, notebooks and socks to be won for the children who would soon be returning to class.
“I’m a single mom and I struggled to get school supplies for my daughter, so it’s really helpful to come to an event like this where they help the community,” Elizabeth Macias said Saturday.
Held at the Dream Center, the event was on a first-come, first-served basis. There was also a waterslide for children present and other games to play during the event.
Kershaw personally distributed 3,500 backpacks full of essentials.
“Give a child a backpack and see their faces and be able to do that and have our children with us too and be able to see what it’s really like to bring joy to a child, life because that maybe they didn’t have the same opportunities growing up, that’s really cool for us,” Kershaw added.
The Dream Center Foundation supports members of the Los Angeles community by providing free resources and services.
