UP polls: Akhilesh Yadav promises free power for irrigation, households if they vote for power

Ahead of the crucial assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday pledged 300 units of free electricity to households, if elected to power. The former chief minister also pledged free electricity for irrigation.

Wishing the people a happy new year, Yadav tweeted in Hindi: “2022 will be a new year with a new light for a new Uttar Pradesh. Three hundred units of electricity for households (domestic consumers) will be provided free of charge and electricity for irrigation will be free.

A similar promise was made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in September 2021.

The party led by Arvind Kejriwal had promised 300 units of free electricity to all domestic consumers, a waiver of unpaid bills from 38 lakh families and a 24-hour power supply.

AAP chief and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also announced free electricity for farmers.

The AAP has made similar pledges in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa, where Assembly polls are expected this year.
