WAPDA awards contracts worth Rs 98.5 billion to supply 260 MGD of water to Karachi


The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on Thursday awarded three contracts worth Rs 98.5 billion for the construction of Phase I of the Greater Karachi Water Supply System – also known as K-IV to deliver 260 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Karachi.

As per the details, the contract documents signing ceremony was held here on Thursday at WAPDA Mega Hydel Projects Complex. Water Resources Federal Minister Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah was the chief guest at the ceremony. WAPDA Chairman Naveed Asghar Chaudhry, WAPDA Member (Water) Javed Latif, WAPDA Member (Energy) Jamil Akhtar and representatives of consultants and relevant construction companies also attended the ceremony.

During this signing ceremony, WAPDA Projects General Manager (South)/Project Director, K-IV Amir Moghal and the representatives of the contractors signed the contract documents on behalf of WAPDA and the construction companies. respectively.

Addressing the ceremony, Federal Water Resources Minister Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah said K-IV is a vital project for Karachi as it will help solve the problem of water supply to the cosmopolitan center and economy of Pakistan. Expressing his satisfaction with WAPDA for streamlining the project, the Federal Minister said that today is a great day for K-IV and we hope the project will be completed on schedule.

Earlier, WAPDA GM (South) Projects/PD informed the Minister that Phase I of K-IV project which will be constructed in Thatta, Malir and Karachi West districts with an approved PC-I of 126.5 billion rupees, plans to supply 260 MGD of water to Karachi. The project will be built through eight packages; two of which have already been awarded, three have been today while the remaining three will also be awarded in the next ten days. Two contractors have been mobilized to the site and construction of the project will begin the first week of July. Phase I of K-IV is expected to be completed in October 2023, the Minister further informed.

It is worth mentioning that the three contracts signed today include Contract Package K-IV – PL-I worth Rs 52.71 Billion for MS Pressure Water Pipelines and Related Works from RD 0 to RD 64+200, K-IV PL-II Contract Package worth Rs 28.846 Billion for MS Pressure Water Transmission Pipelines and Related Works from RD 64+200 to RD 111+700 and the K-IV – PS contract package worth Rs 17.40 billion for Engineering and Construction (EPC). Turnkey pumping station contract (civil engineering, electricity and mechanics).
